Judith Pella is a Christian author that writes historical novels. Many of the author’s books have been produced in collaboration with Michael Phillips.
+Biography
Judith Pella read extensively as a child. She loved to listen to stories and, later on, acquired an affinity for telling them. And it wasn’t just books that consumed her. Pella was an avid watcher of television shows and movies.
Anything that had the capacity to generate a good story Pella gravitated towards. The author had plenty of opportunities to nurture her writing abilities once she began school. Pella was always that one rare child that looked forward to her writing assignments.
The author’s interest in history was sparked around that time. Pella believes that she was drawn to the subject because of her imaginative mind. The author could not help but take the dry facts presented to her and translate them into the most romantic of epic tales.
There is a spy story out there set in the Civil War that Judith Pella wrote when she was eleven. It wasn’t a good story. Pella knows that. But she speaks fondly of her first attempt at formal writing because it gave her the kick she needed to keep mastering her writing skills.
One assumes that Pella saw how her knowledge of history became a spy story at that time and realized the potential that could be mined from history. She never got the chance to explore that thread further, at least not for many years.
As tends to happen with most authors, life took over. Judith Pella went to college. She experimented with nursing for a little while before realizing that her talents would be better utilized elsewhere.
So she went ahead and began teaching at an elementary school. It wasn’t that Judith Pella was ignorant of her passion for writing. She had just never thought about pursuing a publishing career.
She had chosen to dismiss her childhood dreams of seeing her name on actual books in the library as just that, dreams. When the author finally sat down to write, it was as a means of relaxation.
With all the stress and tension in her life, Pella needed a release. So she started writing. Pella believes that her actions were primarily engineered by God because it did not take long for Michael Phillips, her friend, and a published author, to stumble upon her work.
Phillips loved her work. He saw potential in her writing efforts and he went so far as to ask her to collaborate with him on a Scottish novel he had in the works. Pella couldn’t say ‘Yes’ fast enough.
The publication of ‘Heather Hills of Stonewycke’ was a source of great joy for Pella. Even though it was the result of a collaborative effort, the title still counted as Pella’s first published novel.
Seeing her name on the book cover was all the impetus Pella needed. She had felt the thrill of writing and publishing a book. So she started to seek it out by writing many more novels and seeing them published.
Judith Pella refers to herself as a woman of faith. She speaks often about God and her beliefs. The author compares herself to the disciple Peter. She appreciates Peter because he was just a simple fisherman before God approached him and did a work that forced his hidden gifts to surface.
Pella believes that she would have sat on her writing gift for the rest of her life if God hadn’t given her the nudge she needed to put her talents to effective use.
For a long time, Judith Pella and her family have called Oregon home.
There is more to Pella’s life than writing. When she isn’t telling stories, the author is reading or quilting. She also sails often, typically in the company of her husband.
+Distant Dreams
Carolina Adams wasn’t built for 1835. But even with her frustration over society’s expectations for women like her, Carolina cannot help the era in which she was born.
Though, an opportunity for some release comes when her father gets her a tutor. Carolina has always wanted to study something more masculine. She has especially harbored a love for the railroad.
Carolina expects James Baldwin to open many doors for her. Unfortunately for her, Baldwin has more on his mind than her tutelage. The teacher intends to court her beautiful older sister.
Baldwin isn’t prepared for all the ways his interactions with Carolina will change him.
The first book in the ‘Ribbons of Steel’ series follows the exploits of the 15-year-old daughter of Joseph Adams and his wife Margaret. Joseph and his wife are loving people that enjoy their southern way of life.
Their young daughter cares little for her ‘southern belle’ image. She wants to expand her prospects by pursuing higher learning. And while that is the opposite of what her mother wants, Joseph’s attempts to make Carolina happy see him hire a tutor that can intellectually challenge her.
The tutor in question has set his sights on Virginia, the eldest daughter. Virginia is the perfect picture of a Southern Belle. Yet, for all her beauty, she is almost past the age for eligibility when it comes to marriage. She is determined to find a husband.
+A Hope Beyond
Carolina Adams longs for freedom. She can no longer stand to live at the family plantation, not after losing her first true love. Carolina’s opportunity to escape comes when she becomes a nanny to a little girl in Baltimore.
James Baldwin threw himself into his work after his engagement with Virginia Adams ended. He still dreams about Carolina but he doesn’t know if their love is meant to be, not with so circumstances working against them.
The second book in the ‘Ribbons of Steel’ series finds Carolina Adams and James Baldwin in dire straits. James was engaged to Carolina’s older sister, Virginia. However, over time, Baldwin and Carolina fell in love.
Baldwin broke his engagement with Virginia and left. This book finds Carolina and Baldwin trying to pick up the pieces of their shattered lives. They must find the courage to confront their feelings for one another. Judith Pella explores the place and purpose of God in the lives of his followers.
