David Moody is an English author that writes horror novels. Moody is best known for ‘Autumn’, a book he published in 2001 and which later received a movie adaptation.

+Biography

David Moody was born in 1970 in Dudley, Staffordshire, England. Even as a child, Moody’s fascination for horror was unmistakable. For one thing, he couldn’t get it out of his mind that the world was going to end one day.

He didn’t understand how people could move on with daily life, assuming that the world was always going to stay the same. To Moody’s young mind, the planet was just one breath away from a catastrophe sweeping across its surface and changing life forever.

And it wasn’t just diseases and plagues that kept Moody up but the idea of meteorites smashing into the earth or even the economy crumbling and bringing about untold disaster.

Of course, none of these thoughts terrified David Moody per say. If anything, the possibilities fascinated him. It helped that he was always reading apocalyptic fiction.

The author counts ‘War of the Worlds’ (H.G. Wells) and’ Day of the Triffids’ (Wyndham) among his favorite literary works. It wasn’t always easy for Moody to pursue his passions. Naturally, some of the adult elements in his life grew concerned with his interests.

They couldn’t see what Moody saw. They did not understand how apocalyptic stories moved the author, forcing him to imagine just how easily life could be transformed by an external force.

It should be noted that while David Moody loved horror, he did not necessarily want to write it. For this reason, while the author’s decision to work for a High Street Bank after school was a little odd, it wasn’t out of the realm of possibility.

For the longest time, David Moody’s interest in horror was just that, an interest. It wasn’t until Moody had done the rounds in the formal employment pool for some time that he finally realized where his passion lay.

Moody was a storyteller. He loved horror and apocalyptic fiction and he wanted to tell stories about his passion. Moody’s initial plan was to go into movies. It didn’t take him long to realize that not having the necessary training and expertise was an issue.

Moody admits that, at the time, he thought putting a movie together was a relatively simple process. But none of the shortcuts he was looking for paid off. That did not discourage the author who realized that if he could not tell horror stories through film, he would write them on paper for others to read.

It was from that situation that Moody’s publishing career arose. Moody wasn’t especially gifted in writing at the time. However, the activity had piqued his interest when he much younger, though it never occurred to him to pursue it professionally.

After realizing that writing was a simple matter of putting words together and that he had the basic skills to do just that, David Moody began to write. Every story that Moody had ever wanted to put on film he begun to throw into his novels.

The author’s first novel was ‘Straight to You’. Moody got a small Publisher in the United Kingdom to publish it. Though, seeing his books on the shelves of stores didn’t mean that much to Moody at the time.

No one was really reading his book and, as such the profits were tiny. Also, Moody was too busy to care. He now had a family and that meant responsibilities that consumed his money and time.

When Moody finally returned to the writing arena, it was to publish ‘Autumn’. The timing of the book’s release was fortuitous. The internet had become more of a thing at that point.

So Moody did the unexpected and released the book online for free. He didn’t think anyone would buy it if he published it traditionally, so he just gave it away. To his surprise, people couldn’t get enough of it.

That was the impetus the author needed to begin writing. This time he wrote with the intention of using the internet to get his books to readers. The strategy worked. Moody even created ‘Infected Books’, his own Publishing House.

Though, the publishing house eventually proved to be more trouble than he had expected. While ‘Infected Books’ titles were selling like hot cakes, running the business proved to be quite the complex task, so much so that Moody found he did not have the time to write new novels anymore.

Moody relieved some of the pressure by releasing some of his books through traditional publishers; though ‘Infected Books’ has always been Moody’s first love and he has shown no intention of letting it die.

+Adaptations

‘Autumn’ was David Moody’s first true publishing success. The book was adapted into a Canadian Horror movie in 2009. Directed by Steven Rumbelow and starring Dexter Fletcher, the book tells the story of a schoolteacher who must survive a world overrun with zombies.

+Autumn

The world should have ended when a deadly disease killed 99% of the human population. But it did not. Rather, the dead came back to life and began to hunt the few surviving members of humankind.

The dead pose no threat when they first return: largely blind and too slow and lumbering to manifest much of a challenge.

But then they begin to change. Not only do their senses slowly return but they acquire a new instinct for violence. And their only goal is to wipe out the remnants of mankind.

This book is designed to look at the zombie threat from a whole new angle.

+Hater

The world has gone mad. Every once in a while perfectly ordinary and rational people will become vicious killers, consumed by unexpected frenzy and participating in violent assaults against the innocent.

What starts out as isolated incidents quickly grow as the actions of these so-called ‘Haters’ shake the foundations of society. There is no rationale to the attacks in question. Anyone and everyone, regardless of their race, sex, or gender could become a Hater.

When it becomes clear that even friends and close family cannot be trusted to act within reason, it becomes a fight for survival.

Danny McCoyne is the everyman at the center of this chaos. Danny just wants to grab his family so that they can lock themselves away behind a secure door. But can Danny slide that bolt into place knowing that the danger might come from within?
