D.J. Butler is an American novelist from Rocky Mountain west, who writes children’s fiction, science fiction, steampunk, and fantasy novels. Butler trained as a lawyer and worked as a legal expert for a major multinational semiconductor manufacturer, and as a securities lawyer before going into private practice. He is also a corporate trainer, consultant, and teacher of business acumen to employees of some of the top companies in the United States. He is famously a lover of the languages and language, a voracious reader, self-recorder, and guitarist. He has been authoring works of fiction since 2010, specializing in a wide range of genres from horror, dystopian fiction, alternate history, superhero, cyberpunk, steampunk, space opera, science fiction, and fantasy. He writes novels for adult readers, young adult, and middle grade readers most of which are published by Knopf. In addition to his writing, he acts as WordFire’s Acquisitions Editor and performs improvised interactive theater at fantasy and science fiction conventions with friends from his writing groups. He is married to fellow novelist Emily who he describes as a clever and powerful woman with whom he has three children. His children are players of games, speakers of foreign tongues, musicians, writers, and readers just like their father. Butler lives in Stephen R. Covey’s first home in Utah, and works from the same office from which the acclaimed author penned his “The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People”.

D.J. Butler had always wanted to be one of the greatest fantasy writers ever since he read the all-time epic saga “Lord of the Rings” when he was eight years old. However, he would never get into writing, as his life would see him take several detours that included going to study law before practicing in London for over a decade. He would then move to New York and Idaho as trainer and consultant until 2010, when he started writing novels professionally. His fantasy for young readers, dystopian fiction, urban fantasy such as “Rock Band Fights Evil” series, and steampunk such as the “City of the Saints” series have been some of his most popular series of novels to date. In 2017, he published the critically acclaimed bestseller “Witchy Eye” that was a culmination of his dream to publish an epic fantasy. His debut epic fantasy is about a xenophobic, loyal, brave, and clever girl named Sarah, who happens to be a daughter of Mad Hannah Penn the dead empress and Appalachee witch.

Butler is an expert world builder, writing fantasy adventure fiction based on world history, the diverse language and cultures that make for something very special. The characters travel through different regions interacting with a variety of cultural, religious, and political systems in what are ambitious epic fantasy narratives. The City of Saints and the Rock Band Fights Evil series are novels steeped deep in American history and a lot of mythology about the American continent too. The mythological narratives of the magic of the Mississippi, the magical artifacts, the founding fathers, wild gods, and beast men make an appearance in the novels. Butler writes of magical diversity where focus amulets provide power to mages through the recitations of Latin phrases, Voodoo, and blending hexing. The novels speak to the understanding that the characters of their own worlds, through the systems through which it is presented to them. With intense density and depth, D.J. gives the novels a feeling of incredible vastness as fully realized locales and several exotic ones are explored over several days.

“Liahona” is the first steampunk novel of the “City of Saints” series of novels set in the days just prior to the American Civil War. The South and the North are both desperate to bring President Brigham Young of the Kingdom of Deseret to their side of the divide. Both sides send their envoys to the president to seek the support of the Mormons, who are said to have phlogiston weaponry that would be decisive in any confrontation. Meanwhile, the British Empire has entered the race to find favor with the powerful kingdom of Deseret. They engage the services of Richard Burton the British explorer, Edgar Allen Poe, and Samuel Clemens who are racing towards Salt Lake Valley. Throw in some mysterious woman who may be a spy, a giant steam powered carriages, flesh devouring beetles, and nonstop action adventure. The novel is an excellent novel for anyone that loves a novel with alternate history and steampunk narratives.

“Deseret” the second novel in the series opens to Sam Clemens arriving in Great Salt Lake City, to get entangled in events beyond his control or understanding. Meanwhile, the rift between the North and the South comes to a head as Edgar Allan Poe faces up to his old nemesis. Is Madman Pratt playing Sam for a fool, and will Poe’s disguise be effective against his assailants. Most important of all, which side will Richard Burton take and will it help Sam when the chips are down. “Deseret” is an excellent Mormon steampunk novel that is the second of a giant omnibus paper back. The novel is an intricate pretzel of politics with compelling and fun characters and full of neo-Victorian machines from the first page to the last. Combining retro science fiction and fantasy, it is an inextricable braid that would be great for any love of alternate histories such as the Eliza R. Snow’s scientific romances.
