Alyssa Cole Best Books
An Extraordinary Union
An Extraordinary Union is the first installment in the Loyal League book series by Alyssa Cole. This novel is a standout example of a historical romance novel since it is solidly and deeply grounded in reality. The author does not view the past through Vaseline-smeared lenses, and neither does she soap around. An Extraordinary Union is undeniably a blast from the past and highlights the obscene history of abuse and racism in America. The author, Alyssa Cole introduces the readers to the protagonist, Elle, who is an exceedingly furious woman and she has every reason to be. Because she is black and female, Elle is disregarded and sidelined by nearly everyone including a majority of the unionists who many at times love to spy on her. However, Elle’s apparent unimportance is undeniably one of her greatest weapons; the refusal of the Confederate to see as a human being means that they do not take note of her listening to them. Another great weapon that Elle possess is her eidetic memory.
The romance conflict in the Extraordinary Union centers on Elle’s difficulty in trusting Malcolm, who apart from being white; he has a way with his words and is a very charming man. Malcolm is a very likable character, and as the story progresses he grows in empathy and understanding and his respect for Elle is marvelous. One of the most thought-provoking things about this novel is Malcolm’s ability to give himself to Elle wholeheartedly and put everything about their shared cause, but Elle still cannot do the same for him. Elle constantly worries about an unjust and brutal world. In one of the most powerful scenarios in the novel, after the two have declared their love for one another and Malcolm is lost in her, Elle does not try to save him. By rescuing him, it was going to risk the lives of her friends and her mission, which is to stop the Confederacy. Thus, she decides to put her friend’s life and her mission as well ahead of Malcolm’s life.
This is undeniably an exceptional decision in a romance, which in no way weakens the love story. The Extraordinary Union is a tense spy novel that is filled with sweeping romance, blast outrage, and powerful history as well.
Radio Silence
Radio Silence is the first installment in the Off the Grid book series. The book begins right after all kind of technologies has failed and a subtle breakdown of the society is taking place. It is only a few weeks into the technological failure. Thus Radio Silence is not a full dystopian Hunger Games or Lord of flies. Author Alyssa Cole introduces the readers to Arden the protagonist and her roommate John. The two decides to flee the city after the sudden failure of technology because they believe things may get worse and worse as time goes by. The two have decided to head to John’s home where they believe things will be much better for them. They are not only looking for shelter but also food as well. However, while on the way something bad happens, luckily enough Gabriel, John’s brother was around and managed to save the day. Gabriel is mad at Arden because he believes that the predicament that John had found himself in was her fault, thereby she ended putting John in grave danger.
Gabriel and Arden continue to exchange words until John decides to intervene and takes all the blame. Despite his intervention, the tension between John and Gabriel continues to build up and eventually turns into sexual tension. As the novel progresses, these three characters come to the realization that their parents are missing. Guilt begins to eat up Arden as she had refused to see her parents before the entire city was plunged into total darkness.
Let it Shine
Let is Shine is a brilliantly written interracial romance novella that has been set in the year 1961. This novella takes place just after the civil rights movement. Let It Shine is narrated from two perspectives: Sophronia, an exceedingly young African American protagonist, and Ivan, her lover. Ivan and Sophronia meet once again after they last saw each other last when they were still kids. Ivan’s family employed Sophronia’s mother as a house help. Thus, Ivan and Sophronia had ample time to play together and interact with another. After the sudden death of Sophronia’s mother, these two characters do not see each other for several years. However, the two meet once again during a meeting for non-violent protests. Because this novel was set during the civil rights movement, the challenges and hurdles that the two face are expected.
To give a different light to the theme, the author narrates the story from their perspectives. From Ivan’s side, the story was told from the perspective of a Jewish man, who had fallen in love with an African American woman. As expected, Ivan faces some prejudice mainly because 1961 is not that far from the holocaust.
Signal Boost
Signal Boost is the second installment in the Off the Grid book series. In this installment, the author introduces the readers to John. The book begins as John finds Mykhail stealing from his garden. John’s family is sympathetic and decides to accommodate the poor boy, who had nothing to eat or a shelter above his head. Before he raided the garden, Mykhail had planned to go to a nearby University. Mykhail claims that he knows the main reason why the entire country was plunged into a technological blackout. Once he heard the story, John volunteers to go with Mikhail. The main reason why John volunteers to go the University with Mykhail is not that he is curious, but mainly that he is smitten.
