Delilah S. Dawson is an American author best known for writing dark and whimsical young science fiction and adult fantasy. Born in Roswell, Georgia, Dawson is best known for the Blud series of novels, a popular paranormal romance set of novels, the first of which was “Wicked as They Come”, that was first published in 2012. She also writes erotica as Ava Lovelace and fantasy as Lila Bowen. She has also written Carniepunk e-novellas with one of her short stories being commissioned into Amazon Kindle Worlds program, while another made it into Gallery’s Carniepunk Anthology. Dawson has received a lot of praise from critics with RT Book Reviews calling her earliest works a refreshing and innovative new voice in fantasy and science fiction. She has won critical acclaim and several awards over the years that include starred reviews from Library Journal, Publishers Weekly, and Kirkus Reviews. Among the many awards she has won is the May Seal of Excellence for her first novel “Wicked as She Wants”, Steampunk Book of the Year Award in 2013, and RT Book Reviews Fantasy Book of the Year in 2015. In addition to her professional writing career, she is an associate editor at CoolMomTech and CoolMomPicks.
Growing up in her native Roswell, reading and writing was always something that the young Delilah loved to do. In high school, she would crank out a huge quantity of maudlin poetry, and art class descriptions, but never believed herself to be destined to be a writer. Even as she loved writing, she thought of authors as special persons that had a calling for the writing profession similar to that of nuns or doctors. As such, she was a late bloomer and only got to write her first novel when she was thirty twoyears old. While taking care of her first child and helping her husband edit some of his works, she began to think that maybe she could do it. It was not long before she had her first book about a mother and wife that took a trip to Greece with her husband, only to fall prey to Zeus’s charms just like many other women before her. While she never published the magical realist novel, it gave her the confidence that she could make something of her love for writing. She cites her biggest influences in her professional career as Stephen King, who was one of the earliest authors she ever read. As a child, there were not many books in the Young Adult section of the library or bookstore she did not read. She pushed her boundaries to read Stephen King’s Pet Sematary and Carrie, before she ventured into romance titles such as Diana Gabaldon’s Outlander series and the Wilderness series by Sara Donati.
Her most popular work is the Blud series of novels, which is about women woman that are whisked away to a Victorian steampunk world, where they find love. In the new paranormal world, known as Sangland or Sang, they find themselves enamored with handsome and mysterious men. The men are Bludmen and traveling carnivals whose favorite drink is blood though they are not your typical cross/nocturnal paranormal being. Throwing some of her favorite aspects of fantasy and science fiction in the novel, Delilah Dawson writes novels full of adventure that includes kraken, bloodthirsty rabbits, submarines, ghosts, and corsets. The characters and concept for her Blud series came to her like some sort of coincidence. She had been listening to Pandora when she stumbled upon the Hush Sound band and their album Like Vines, which she liked so much that she purchased it. After binge-watching episodes of Buffy the Vampire Slayer and listening to the album the whole day, she had a surrealistic dream in which she woke up naked perched on a huge rock in a dark forest. A few feet away from her was a handsome guy in a cravat that talked like a Spike from Buffy and looked like Mr. Darcy though a little bit more naughty. Thus was born her characters such as Criminy Stain and Casper Sterling. The series takes many elements from the Like Vines and Buffy the Vampire Slayer.
“Wicked as She Wants” is the first novel in the Blud series of novels by Delilah Dawson. It introduces Tish Everret who stumbles upon a beautiful locket at a yard sale of an ancient estate. What she does not know is that by purchasing the locket she is answering the call of some magician from the land of Sang, Criminy Stain. He had cast the spell, which has transported the woman right to him. Now that she is in Sang, he finds that she is not ready to be in a relationship with another man, having suffered so much under the spell of Jeff her domineering, abusive, and controlling boyfriend. Half of the populace in her new world are Bludmen while the rest are humans. The Bludmen love to drink blood, but unlike the usual vampires are not affected by sunlight and are in general indestructible, live long, and are more human like than vampire like. The evil mayor of Manchester hates Sang’s Bludmen and in his determination to get rid of them, he steals Tish’s all-important locket intending to use it to travel to earth for reinforcements. Tish and Criminy now fight thundering Bludmares, a secret cabal, wayward submarines, sea monsters, and ghosts as they seek to get back the locket that will allow Tish to go back home. But will she have the will to leave behind the deliciously rakish Bludman that she may just have fallen in love with?
“Wicked as She Wants” is the darkly tempting second novel in the series that features Ahna, a vampire princess on a quest to claim what she believes is rightfully hers. Waking up starving and drained in a suitcase, she is not sure what is more appealing to her senses; the scent of blood or the sound of music. The source of the music and scent of blood is Casper Sterling, a once celebrated London musician that has recently fallen into hard times. With no one to turn to the reckless and debauched Casper is her only ticket back to Freesia, her magical snow rimmed homeland. Together with Keen, Casper’s prickly charge they seek a way back to Freesia where Ravenna a power hungry sorceress has cast a spell on the royal family in Ahna’s absence. From the sparkling minarets of Moscow to the dirty back alleys in London Ahna learns that Freesia is full of dangerous foes and new perils. Back in her Freesia she has to choose between the land that is rightly hers to rule and the love she has for the reckless Casper. What is she to do?
