Born and raised in America, MacKenzi Lee always had a strong passion for both reading and writing from an early age. This allowed her to follow her interest in literature later on when she went on to become a full-time author as an adult. Always on the lookout for new ideas, she would constantly be taking in inspiration from the world around her as well.
Later attending Simmons College she would go on to gain a BA in history followed by an MFA as well. This was focused upon writing for children and young adults, something which would serve her well in her writing career later on. Informed by an extensive and informative education, she would gain the tools needed in taking her writing career forwards.
Prior to writing long-form fiction she also wrote a number of short-stories, along with some non-fiction work as well. This was featured in a variety of different publications, allowing her to establish her name and brand before becoming a full-time author and novelist. Establishing herself through a number of different styles as well, she would also further hone and refine her voice too.
Still writing full-time to this very day, she continues to put out work at a regular pace, as she has definitely become an up-and-coming author to watch. Working as a book-store manager in Boston, where she also lives, she is constantly reading and writing, always looking for new ideas. Not showing any signs of stopping any time soon, her writing career continues to grow from strength-to-strength.
Writing Career
Bringing out her first book back in 2015 she has managed to come a long way in a relatively short amount of time. Releasing the title ‘This Monstrous Thing’ she made her debut onto the literary scene with a stand-alone period title. This allowed her to establish herself as a definite figure to watch, with more books soon to be released shortly after.
After writing this stand-alone work she went on to create the first in a series ‘Guide’ with the first being ‘The Gentleman’s Guide to Vice and Virtue’. This was initially brought out in 2017 setting-up what was to be a franchise of novels with the follow-up set to be released the following year in 2018. Titled ‘The Lady’s Guide to Petticoats and Piracy’, the 2018 novel was set to be a companion piece to the first, with them only being linked thematically.
Getting a number of good reviews as well, she is not without critical acclaim either, as she has also garnered awards too. Receiving a short-list for the title ‘New England Book Award’ for her book ‘The Gentleman’s Guide to Vice and Virtue’, she also managed to garner many five star reviews too. This is something that’s expected to continue on into the foreseeable future for many years to come, as a lot more titles are planned on the horizon.
This Monstrous Thing
Initially released through the ‘Katherine Tegen Books’ publishing house, this marked the début of MacKenzi Lee as a novelist. Working as a stand-alone title it helped to establish her as a name on the literary scene, and as an up-and-coming author. Brought out on the 22nd of September in 2015, this provided a strong first release, as it was both compelling and engaging.
Set in Geneva in 1818, this fantasy period piece follows a group called the Shadow Boys who take care of people with clockwork parts in place of body parts. Operating as illegal mechanics, they function in a shadowy underworld, one of them being Alasdair Finch who, two years ago, had his life drastically shattered. Hoping to put his love Oliver back together after he died, he finds that his once love is now something else, a Frankenstein’s monster. Will they ever be able to repair their relationship? How will the publication of Frankenstein affect the citizens hoping to find a real-life monster and its scientist? What will become of this monstrous thing?
The Gentleman’s Guide to Vice and Virtue
Brought out through the ‘Katherine Tegen Books’ publishing label, this was to be the first in the ‘Guide’ series from MacKenzi Lee as an author. Setting up the premise with ‘The Lady’s Guide to Petticoats and Piracy’, it offers a fun and unique take on history and class. With a degree of historical accuracy for the period, it works at creating fun and engaging character who draw the reader in keeping them hooked throughout.
With his breeding having set him up to be a ‘gentleman’ of standing, Henry ‘Monty’ Montague has other plans in life. Holding roguish and untamed passions, he has a certain lust for life that can’t be quelled by either his boarding school peers or his parents. Now all set to take a Grand Tour of Europe he has a crush on his travelling partner Percy, as his sister Felicity follows them both, all the while his father plans for him to come back and take charge of the family estate. Will he be able to see the journey through to its end? Is he going to have to come home early? Just what lies within the gentleman’s guide to vice and virtue?
Book Series In Order » Authors »
I am loving the siblings series. I am 60 years old, so not a young adult by any stretch, and I appreciate the depth and arcs of the characters and their complex relationships. Also appreciate that serious issues like feminism and discrimination are raised in ways that are accessible and thoughtful.
I have to say the author’s bio above is in embarrassing need of editing!
Looking forward to reading more of your books.
