The Davie McCall series written by Douglas Skelton is comprised of 4 books in total, which were released between the years 2013 and 2016. Each of the books of this series feature the lead character as Davie McCall. The debut novel of this series is entitled ‘Blood City’. It was released in the year 2013 by the Luath Press. At the start of the book’s story, it is shown that Davie McCall lives in Glasgow and is more than an average henchman. For the first 15 years of his life, Davie was tormented and abused by his father. This has caused a permanent darkness in him from the inside, and Davie tries to find a way out. He begins to flourish under the Godfather of Glasgow named Joe the Tailor. Joe is known to be a killer, but he follows a certain moral code and Davie respects him for that. He does not like to deal in drugs. Also, Joe doesn’t appreciate foul language and violence on women. Later, when Joe refuses to join in a newly started drug trade, he gets attacked from all sides by the members of the underworld of Glasgow. Due to this, the entire underworld turns upside side, and Davie gets caught up in the middle of all the action. However, he gets support from a young and attractive reporter, who makes him realize that he can leave behind his criminal life and start afresh. In doing so, Davie McCall goes through a lot of hardships and difficulties. Overall, the novel is an excellent description of Glasgow’s underworld during its phase of seismic shift. It depicts a story of corruption, betrayal, violence, friendships destroyed apart, and loyalties tested.
Another popular book written in the series is called ‘Devil’s Knock’. The Luath publication released this book too in 2015. Once again, author Douglas has described the story as having taken place in Glasgow. The primary characters of this novel’s story include Davie McCall and Dickie Himes. At the beginning of the story of the book, it is depicted that Davie McCall still has the darkness inside of him. This darkness keeps haunting him on one hand, and on the other hand it helps him carry out despicable things to the ones trying to harm him and his friends. After the killing of Dickie Himes in one of the Jarvis clan-owned clubs, a series of events is sparked. Davie McCall knows it very well that the events can cause a huge gang war on the Glasgow streets. The police seem to try everything possible in their limit to stop the criminal activities, but all their efforts go in vain. Finally, Davie McCall decides to take the matter in his hands as justice is easily corrupted or bought in Glasgow. While doing so, Davie must also deal with the ghosts of all those he has previously failed. These include a Hollywood actor as well as a dog. All the while, Davie McCall keeps wondering whether he will be able to get rid of the persistent darkness inside his own self after finding a target on the back and step back from killing or the devil’s knock will prove too tempting for him. The book was very much appreciated by numerous readers and the critics. It received rave reviews and became highly successful.
