Brad Meltzer Biography:
Brad Meltzer is a best selling American author who has written non-fiction and crime fiction. He is also a television show creator and a comic book writer. He is a New York Times #1 Best Seller of a total of seven books. He was born April 1, 1970. He grew up in Brooklyn and Miami. His father worked in the garment industry until they moved to Florida. His father began selling insurance and his mother found work in a furniture store. Brad has said writing creatively has always been a big part of his life.
Meltzer graduated from the North Miami Beach Senior High School in 1988. He then attended the University of Michigan. At nineteen he went to Washington D.C. to intern on Capitol Hill. After graduating in 1993, Meltzer got an offer from a magazine. However, the editor he wanted to work with was leaving, so he decided to put his focus into writing a novel instead. The book was called Fraternity and was never published after two dozen rejections. He attended law school with a childhood sweetheart at Columbia Law and was chosen to be on the Law Review. He married that sweetheart and she became his wife Cori. They have two sons and a daughter together.
Meltzer found some work in 1994 when he co-authored the swearing-in oath that all AmeriCorps members accept. Meltzer sold the second novel he worked on while in law school, called The Tenth Justice. It was published in 1998 and became a New York Times Bestseller. The story follows Ben Addison, selected to be a clerk for a Supreme Court justice. Ben is focused, and eager, but also untested by experience. When he accidentally reveals the verdict for a high level case, one of the parties uses the information to make millions. Ben must rely on his fellow clerk Lisa and reliable house mates in high places to help defeat the blackmailer and must trace the weak links back to their source. Even if the source is one of their own.
Dead Even was published in 1999. Sara Tate, an assistant District Attorney in Manhattan is threatened with a deadly demand. She must win the case to save the life of her husband Jared, who is also a lawyer. However, Jared has been given the same exact set of instructions. Each is tasked with the desperate task of doing everything they can to secure a victory. The spouses give it their all in court and feel the tension at home while maintaining the terrible secret that drives them. No matter how hard they fight, in the end, someone might get hurt.
Since the publishing of Dead Even, Brad Meltzer has written a novel almost every year. He followed up his second book with 2001’s The First Council, about a lawyer at the White House who becomes involved with the President’s daughter. Everything goes peachy until they become witnesses to something no one was intended to see.
Brad Meltzer has since written The Millionaires, about two brothers with opposing personalities making a run with stolen money. He followed The Millionaires with The Identity Crisis, The Zero Game, The Book of Fate, The Book of Lies, and Heroes For My Son, and Heroes For My Daughter, both non-fiction works. He has also written The Inner Circle, published in 2011, about a childhood friend and the pair’s accidental find of George Washington’s 200 year old dictionary. His most recent novel was The Fifth Assassin, released in 2013.
Brad wrote a story for six Green Arrow comics #16-21 for DC Comics. He also was one of the artists that worked on a tribute book to Jeph Loeb who died young in life of cancer. The issue was Superman/Batman 26. In 2004 DC Comics published Identity Crisis, a comic book where chaos and risk of identities being revealed are reigning among the Justice League.
In 2004 The WB premiered a television series called Jack & Bobby. Brad Meltzer was a co-creator. The show focused on an older brother and his younger brother Bobby, who is often by himself. Bobby will one day be the President of the United States and serve for two terms in 2041. The series ran for 22 episodes and was not chosen to be renewed.
Meltzer agreed to write thirteen issues for the Justice League of America series in 2006. He also participated in a think tank for the Department of Homeland Security in a program that draws outsiders in for unique ideas and viewpoints on hypothetical situations. He received an Eisner Award for the first issue with Justice League in 2008.
Brad agreed to sign on to do a three-comic arc on Buffy The Vampire Slayer Season Eight in the graphic novel series published by DarkHorse.
Meanwhile, History Channel offers Brad Meltzer’s Decoded which premiered on December 2, 2010. In this series, Brad goes and attempts to decode conspiracy theories and mysteries. He along with a team of investigators delve into the puzzles that have not been considered and surround us all in front of our very eyes. Decoded aired to mixed reviews from critics who derided the amount of content but admitted that it did help return the History Channel back towards its original content . The series aired for ten episodes and was picked up for a second season. The second season aired October 5, 2011 for thirteen episodes, the final episode investigating The Devil’s Playground in Alaska.
Brad Meltzer has also been heavily involved into restoring and fixing up the house in which Superman was created. The exterior and interior have been completely renovated and restored with the help of many people and donations. More information is available about this at OrdinaryPeopleChangeTheWorld.com.
For his novel The Fifth Assassin, Brad consulted with President H.W. Bush. He even gave the writer a copy of a letter that he left for Bill Clinton when he became President and filled him on secret underground tunnels beneath the Lincoln Memorial connected to Camp David. The Fifth Assassin is about a copycat serial killer who is re enacting the murders of famous presidential assassins.
Brad Meltzer’s books have been translated into over 25 languages. Brad lives in Florida with his wife.

Wish he had written the schools true history books with all the added, unknown details. How exciting going to class would have been. Now at 68, I find the book ends too soon. Discovered him by insomniac accident, found myself with phone in hand having dozed off the next morning. Who needs sleeps anyway? (smiling)
I loved the Beecher/White Culper Ring series! Great story! I really enjoy the fact that you can read a story that involved without being complicated. I would love to see more Beecher!
Second time reading the Culper Ring series and would wish for more. History really comes alive in this series in a way most exciting and interesting.
Thank you Mr. Meltzer for your knowledge and interest in history and archives. Blessings to you and yours
Saw Brad on the Barbara Bush PBS special. Which book was about the valet taking the car to “home” and which one was about the secret stashes of treatments for biological attacks?
Thank you,
John
I just finished The President’s Shadow after reading the first two in the series. It’s the first Brad Meltzer I’ve read and can see why he is so popular. Will there be another installment of the Culper Ring series? If so, when?
Thanks.
