Chronicles of Brother Hermitage series is a set of novels written by United Kingdom bestselling author Howard Warwick. The author began the publication of the series in 2010 when The Heretics of De’Ath was published.
The Heretics of De’Ath
This is the first novel in Chronicles of Brother Hermitage series by Howard Warwick. The book opens up and introduces the readers to De’Ath Dingle which is hosting a crucial debate. However, the question at hand now is whether Jesus, during his forty day and nights in the wilderness got sand in his sandals. However four days before his opening debate statement, Brother Ambrosius sits down, and a few hours later the only monk who is still awake in the audience is Hermitage who realizes that Ambrosius is dead. What follows next is that Hermitage is dispatched by the monastery’s Abbot to report the death incident to the Bishop. While heading to report the case to the bishop, he is attacked by some thugs, but fortunately, he is saved by a traveler who becomes his companion and from there on mystery piles on to mysteries.
The debut novel in the series is an interesting read, Brother Hermitage is bright, but he is also totally unfamiliar with anything outside the monastery walls. You will join him as he travels and his eyes are opened to the world. This is an insidious story with some combinations of political and religious skullduggery and monks both naïve and entirely worldly.
The Garderobe of Death
The year is 1067 in England and Henri de Turold, the favorite hunting companion of King William has been brutally murdered. How the killer did it given the nature of the fatal wound is a complex mystery. Lord Robert Grosmal, of the disordered castle, muddled mind understands pretty well that the king gets very upset when his friends are killed, and in response, he sends to the proximal monastery of De’Ath for a monk to investigate. The medieval monks are usually good at this sort of thing. Hermitage, the medieval monk but he is not very good at this kind of things, he is only motivated by the point of a sword that he and his partner Wat set off to solve the crime.
With the king arriving that night, the sleuth investigators get on the move to address the mystery of murder, and Hermitage’s second criminal investigation reveals many things, but improvement is not among them. If you are looking for the best depiction of the medieval world, and an insightful exploration of the amateur sleuth of the time, Chronicles of Brother Hermitage series is a good read for you.
The Tapestry of Death
The year is 1067 and Briston the Weaver has been brutally killed and in a special way. It is of his good old friend Wat to avenge his death. As usual, Brother Hermitage supports Wat in his mission to avenge the death of his good friend. However, what worries Brother Hermitage is that the number of suspects keeps on rising and he has never been good with crowds.
When the events take one twisted turn for the truly bizarre, Wat and Brother Hermitage find themselves entangled in a complex puzzle and with people who want to see them sent six feet underground, people who want to see everyone dead. The must find the missing maiden, confront a giant killer and then unravel the terrible secrets held by the Tapestry of Death before the matters are resolved. With a monk, priests, tradespeople, Saxons, and Normans, the Tapestry of Death is a robust and a traditional medieval which will send you back in time and have a glimpse of the medieval world.
Hermitage, Wat……Murder or Other
This is the fourth novel in Chronicles of Brother Hermitage series by Howard Warwick. The author’s works are hilarious and quite engaging, if you value historical/medieval works, then this is the book to look for. After the year 1066, not all the Normans lived in England, there were those left in Normandy, and some were up to no good, and ghastly Le Pedvin wants one of them dealt with accordingly.
Brother Hermitage, one of the old detective and his partner Wat, the weaver of tapestry, one you would not want your children to see are sent to Norman homeland to bring the killer to justice. How they bring the killer to the law is up to them and why they are doing it is none of their business either; they have their direct orders, and just in case they disobey this order they will face death- just like any other citizen who defies the king’s order.
It is not clear what Pedvin is up to, and also it is not also clear that anyone is dead. It is also not clear about the Norman villagers at all, and lastly, it is not clear whether Wat and Hermitage are going to get out alive this time.
Brother Hermitage. The shorts
This is a short story from the Chronicles of Brother Hermitage; it is a story about a medieval monk who tends to be around when crimes get solved. In this book, Hermitage entered a hostelry to escape the cold and could not imagine the bizarre situation in which he would find himself in. The story is full of twists and turns. The tales that Warwick tells in this book casts new light on the medieval investigation; the follow the comings and the goings of the lead character Hermitage, the monk with some investigative skills. Doing what no over the author of medieval murder would do, Howard Warwick takes the readers into the mind of Brother Hermitage.
The Case of The Curious Corpse
In this novel, Hermitage is compelled to yet another investigation by the sight of a most curious corpse. Helpful compulsion also comes in the shape of King’s Man Le Pedvin and well armed Norman soldiers who will indeed stab him if he does not get on with it.
Suspicions are raised by a host of interesting characters including, Hereward who claim to have loved the victim but all benefit from the death in one way. It is also weird that King William insists that he is not to blame despite boasting about being the killer of many other people. With the help of Wat and Cwen, Hermitage must rely on his investigative skills to solve this mystery.
