Ernest Haycox was one of the prominent authors of the historical and western fiction genres, hailing from The United States. He was born on October 1, 1899; and died on October 13, 1950. Author Haycox’s birth had taken place in Portland, Oregon. His parents were Martha Burghardt and William James Haycox. After completing his primary education in local schools of Oregon and Washington, Haycox joined the US Army in the year 1915. He was first stationed at the Mexican border at the time of the year 1916. When the First World War was going on, author Haycox was stationed in Europe. Following the end of the War, he came back to enroll himself at the Reed College, located in Portland. Haycox went on to graduate from the Oregon University in 1923 with a BA degree in the subject of journalism. He started writing stories under the guidance of professor WFG Thatcher, while he was still studying at the university. It was in 1925 that author Haycox got married to Jill M. Chord, with whom he had a couple of children. Author Haycox wrote and published 2 dozen books and around 300 short stories in his writing career. Many of his stories have featured in the pulp magazines during the early 1920’s. During most of the 1930’s and 40’s, author Haycox used to contribute to the Collier’s Weekly and The Saturday Evening Post on a regular basis. Some of the fans of his dedicated work included personalities like Ernest Hemingway and Gertrude Stein. In fact, Hemingway had written once that he liked to read The Saturday Post only when Haycox posted his stories and serials in it. One of the books of author Haycox, titled Stage to Lordsburg, was adapted into a film with the name Stagecoach in 1939. John Ford was the director of the film, while John Wayne played the title role in it. The tremendous success of the movie made John Wayne an overnight star and he started getting many film offers after it.

Haycox’s other novel, Trouble Shooter, was used as the basis for the development of the film titled Union Pacific. This 1939 movie had Cecil DeMille as the director, and starred actors like Joel McCrea and Barbara Stanwyck. Besides these, author Haycox has also penned the screenplay of Montana, that had Errol Flynn and Alexis Smith in lead roles and Ray Enright in the role of the director. In 2005, author Haycox was included in the list of the top 24 Western novelists of the 20th century by the WWA. When Haycox used to reside in New York, he attempted to write his interconnected series, whose stories were set in the Brent Creek, a small central Oregon town. From 1924 to 1926, author Haycox stayed in the New York City. During that time, she showed a great interest in American Revolution. He even went on a few trips to the battlefields in New Jersey, Connecticut, New York, Massachusetts, and Pennsylvania. The experience helped him to write 8 stories and 2 novellas. Following the publication of one of the stories, author Haycox got a letter from a fan stating that he had not described the soldiers’ uniforms correctly. This made him purchase a book based on the military uniforms of the Revolutionary era.

And after Haycox shifted to Oregon again in 1926, he started on concentrating on Western novels. And in all the novels he wrote after that, he made sure that he was describing the military uniforms in a correct manner. In order to avoid making any mistake, Haycox used to first research and then put the ideas on paper. The stories of author Haycox that appeared in Collier’s from 1933 to 1938 took place in New Hope, which is was a trading town located on the banks of the Missouri River during the 1880’s. Many of the stories were written in first person, a style that author Haycox used extensively in his career. From the mid 1930’s, author Haycox began writing stories and novels about the historical events. Along with such novels, he used to work on other stories as well, which did not involve specific places or events. It is the historical books of Haycox that the Professors Tanner and Etulain write about the most in the essays related to Haycox. However, Luke Short preferred to talk about his non-historical works.

An initial novel written by Ernest Haycox in the early days of his writing career is entitled ‘Bulges in the Afternoon’. This book was originally published in 1943. In the story of this book, author Haycox has mentioned the compelling tale of the famed 7th Cavalry of Custer and the fate that is incurred at the Little Bighorn Battle. The story depicts a mixture of exposition, history, and action. When the rumors spread in the 7th Cavalry’s Sitting Bull about a campaign, everybody begins to wonder as to who would risk leading the charge. The rumor seems so strong that it cuts among the ranks in the form of cold wind. After its original release in the 1940’s, the book was made available in paperback edition in 2003 by the Oklahoma Press. The historian Richard Etulain has examined the history and impact of Haycox on the novel. Later, a unique insight into the commitment and writing regiment of his father was provided by Haycox Jr. This insight is used as an authentication in the introductory part of the book.

Another wonderful book penned by author Haycox is called ‘Canyon Passage’. It was released for the first time in 1945. The novel considered as one of the famous ones of author Haycox. It tells a powerful story about the men who were addicted towards acquiring gold as much as they could, and the men who battled against each other and the land for gouging the riches from the wilderness in the mountains. The tale also describes the women, whom the men loved with their hearts out all along. This story has been extremely successful right from the time when it initially appeared in the weekly magazine as a serial and then later as the tremendously successful movie with the same title. The book contains everything from a brutal and savage bad man, a love story, a gambler, a betraying friend, trials of kangaroo courtroom, marauding Indians, and a lot more. After reading this exciting novel, it can be rightly said about it that such good western novels are not written anymore. A number of critics have recommended this book for all those readers who are a die hard fan of western classics. It can even prove to be a good read for the ones who love to read good action stories.
