Tim Ellis is an English author known for writing historical and crime fiction thrillers. His first novel “The Knowledge of Time: Second Civilization” was first published in 2008 and set him on the path to a successful writing career. Ellis was born on a dark, stormy night in a Hammersmith, London Hospital in 1953. He grew up in the town of Cheadle in Cheshire, where he went to primary and secondary school. Tim is famously a high school dropout, having never graduated from Broadway Secondary School before taking his examinations. Lucky for him, those were days when finding a job without much education were still possible. It was during this time that he discovered that he had a passion for literature and music, and after meeting Leonard Cohen, began writing poetry a 15-year-old. His poetry career did not start out great as his collection of poems was duly rejected by publishers, leaving him with no option but to take a series of mind numbing jobs to support himself.

At the age of 18, he joined the Army Medical Corps where he spent the next twenty-two years of his life, before he left having attained the rank of Regimental Sergeant Major (Warrant Officer Class 1). The years in the military were an education in itself as he spent much of his time writing papers on such topics such as Military Law, Leadership, and Army Medical Organization. However, it was during this period that he became interested in the works of authors such as Isaac Asimov, Bernard Cornwell, and JRR Tolkien, who became critical literary influences in his later works. After leaving the military, he would hold down several positions in education. Some of these positions included consultant for the National College of School Leadership, associate tutor/lecturer at Anglia Ruskin and Lincoln Universities, and senior financial manager. His last assignment before he quit education in 2009 to focus on his writing career was secondary school teacher specializing in Sociology and Psychology. During his long career in education, he got his MA in Education, an MBA, and a PhD in Educational Management.

By 2009, he had written two historical novels that were based on the life of Genghis Khan – “Warrior: Scourge of the Steppe” and “Warrior: Path of Destiny”, and a Young Adult Science Fiction title – “The Knowledge of Time Second Civilization”. What made him decide to go full-time was a heart attack he suffered in 2009, that made it increasingly difficult to continue with his teaching career. It took Tim Ellis over four decades to choose to become a writer given that it was impossible for a working class boy that dropped out of school to choose such a career path in 1968. Since his retirement from educational pursuits, he has written over thirty science fiction, historical, crime and fantasy novels, including a huge collection of poetry and short stories. He has had his fair share of rejection from publishers in the US and the UK and only experienced major success once he decided to self-publish on Amazon Kindle. His collection of short stories, poetry, and novels has sold over half a million copies since, which is not bad for a school dropout. In 2014, he moved back to Essex, Cheshire where he lives in a two-bedroom bungalow with his wife and three Shih tzu dogs.

The Parish & Richards series of novels is one of the most popular novels by Tim Ellis. The detective crime series follows the adventures of PC Mary Richards and Detective Sergeant Jed Parish. Mary is in her early twenties while her partner Jed is a thirty something year old man. What makes them tick is not only a wonderful working relationship, but also an intense chemistry that permeates all their interactions. Richards is the newest recruit in the force while Jed is the experienced Police Detective who helps her acclimatize to police work. Even as Richard sometimes acts as a naïve and emotional teenager, there is a feeling it is the innocent naivety that draws the headstrong Richards to her. The two work to unravel a series of murder mysteries in London, in the backdrop of political tensions with their bosses and stressful romantic love lives. The mutual respect and disdain they have for each other’s professional choices makes for some intense reading. The novels become even more intriguing when they are backed against the wall and have no choice but to work with each other if they are to have any chance of prevailing.

“In A Life For A Life” the first novel of the Parish & Richards series of novels, what is initially thought to be a routine stabbing soon becomes a manhunt for a serial killer. Mary Richards, a new recruit to the force works with Jed Parish a Detective Inspector and her boss to track down the killer, whose signature is numbered tokens in her victims’ mouth after killing them with an unusual weapon. Going against the conventions of crime/mystery thriller writing, Ellis presents several suspects that the two protagonists have to work with to figure out just who is the villain. In addition to facing a cunning serial killer, Parish and Richards have to deal with coming to know each other. To make matters worse, the Chief of Police has just found out that he has prostate cancer, and he has been pouring his frustrations on the two partners. The most intriguing part of the novel is that the killer has established a pattern, which makes for an intense and spine tingling investigation into the dark history of the victims and the mysterious tokens.

“The Wages of Sin” the second novel in the Parish & Richards series sees a psychopath that had gone silent for seven years make a comeback. He is hanging up his victims upside down in abandoned buildings after mutilating them. His signature move is stringing up the women on tenterhooks and pinning messages written in exotic languages on their breasts. Richards and Parish are assigned the case, but as usual, office politics are never far off, as Trevor Naylor the Chief Inspector wants Parish’s scalp for an earlier humiliation. Meanwhile Richards has her own problems, least of which is the National Investigator’s Examinations, which she just cannot find the peace or time to revise for, as the killer has made her his next target. She also is nervous about Parish finding out she still has problems finding a man and that she snores. What follows is an enthralling investigation that ropes in a range of great characters such as the Chief Superintendent and a forensics expert who working together, finally bring the novel to an explosive conclusion.
