Kyra Davis is an American author best known for the Sophie Katz Mystery series of novels.
+Biography
Kyra Davis is a California girl, born in Santa Clara to an African American Man and an Eastern European woman. Davis’ childhood had its fair share of ups and downs, primarily because the author’s Jewish mother raised her on her own.
Kyra’s interest in the arts was sparked at a very young age. By the time she started school, she had set her sights on the theater and she eventually participated in a few productions.
It seemed like the author was destined to pursue this path all the way to college. But then a trip through Europe changed everything for Kyra, and by the time she came back home, the author had set her sights on Fashion Merchandizing.
Kyra went so far as to enroll at the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising. She even spent some time at the Fashion Institute of Technology. However, that particular path never panned out quite like Kyra had expected, though it was during these years that the author met her first husband.
She eventually settled for a degree in business and humanities which she acquired from Golden Gate University. Divorce came sometime in 2001, leaving Kyra reeling.
The prospect of caring for a two-year-old boy as a single mother filled Kyra Davis with some anxiety, not only because she was struggling financially but also as a result of her child’s special needs situation.
Kyra did not start writing with publishing goals in mind. The author simply needed an escape from all the turmoil in her life. Writing a story about a woman who traverses turmoil to emerge triumphantly gave Kyra that escape. In fact, she remembers laughing quite a few times during the process of penning her story.
And before she knew it, Kyra’s attempts at jotting a few ideas down had turned into fifty pages. The author quickly realized that she had something amazing on her hands.
Kyra eventually reached out, acquired an agent and secured a deal with a publishing house. Since then, Kyra Davis has become a formidable author in the realm of chic-lit.
Kyra’s writing style is heavily influenced by her experience in theater. Kyra grew up honing her ability to write scripts for the stage. Scripts revolve heavily around dialogue, and they are written in such a way that every single voice is distinct.
Kyra has shifted that same storytelling approach to her novels. The author has been commended for having a very clean writing voice that isn’t cluttered by dialogue tags and which makes little to no use of introspection.
Kyra describes herself as a planner. She takes the time to outline her novels. But she also allows for changes to occur. Besides her writing voice, Kyra Davis’ work also stands out because of all the jokes she peppers into her narrative.
The author loves to blend romance with mystery, and those genres definitely lend themselves to her unique brand of humor.
Kyra Davis is married to Rod Lurie, a screenwriter and director
+Sex, Murder, and a Double Latte
Sophie Katz is a mystery writer with an overactive imagination; or at least that is what everyone keeps telling her whenever they dismiss her concerns about an intruder.
However, Sophie won’t be so easily put off. When a filmmaker and friend of Sophie dies, the mystery writer cannot help but notice that he was killed in a manner similar to what happened in one of his movies. Sophie knows there is a mystery afoot, even if no one will believe her. So she puts her detective hat on and decides to get to the bottom of things.
The first book in the Sophie Katz series was a big hit because Kyra Davis wrote such a fun and dynamic character in Sophie Katz. The protagonist of the book, Sophie’s story begins when she realizes that a crazed killer has been nosing around her apartment.
Unfortunately for Sophie, everyone thinks she’s a little crazy. Even her hair dresser thinks she’s reaching. But Sophie trusts her instincts and she is certain that something sinister is going on.
The writer’s hunches are proven accurate when a friend of hers dies and it is revealed that there might be a copycat killer on the loose. And that killer is out to get Sophie.
But Sophie has no intention of lying down and being anyone’s victim. If no one will take her seriously, she will have to track and catch the crazed killer in question alone.
Sophie’s task takes a complicated turn when a new man comes into her life, leaving the author curious as to the intentions of this mysterious figure and whether or not he might be connected to her friend’s murder.
This book succeeds because Kyra’s writing is so engaging and exciting. She also creates some surprisingly relatable characters.
+Passion, Betrayal and Killer Highlights
Sophie Katz cannot catch a break. Just as she finally escapes one murder investigation, her sister Leah’s husband dies and Leah becomes the prime suspect.
Sophie doesn’t believe the allegations, though. Leah and Bob have been married for many years. And they have faced many challenges. Yet, Sophie knows that her sister has always been contented with being married to Bob. And Bob’s infidelity did little to break her devotion to her husband.
In fact, Leah was trying to win her husband back when he was murdered. Sophie realizes that she has to find Bob’s true murderer in order to clear Leah’s name.
The second book in the Sophie Katz series tends to attract mixed reactions, primarily because of Leah. Unlike Sophie, Leah is a very unlikeable character. And it doesn’t help that she has a son that can speak whole and coherent sentences despite being eighteen-months-old.
Leah’s character doesn’t stand up to proper scrutiny. She is described as having been a devoted and loyal wife. However, she shows almost no sadness over the death of her husband. And she doesn’t seem particularly concerned about the fact that her child will now grow up without a father.
The central mystery is lacking; though, Kyra Davis has never promised top notch mysteries to her readers. Like most of her books, this is basic chic-lit.
