Nikki writes in her diary and draws little doodles and illustrations, and writes about her secret crush and everything that happens in her life as a dork and a regular teenage girl growing up and experiencing middle school life and drama.
Dork Diaries: Tales From a Not-So-Fabulous Life
The first book in the globally popular series follows the main character of Nikki Maxwell, a fourteen year old girl who is starting eighth grade and doing it at a new school to boot. She’s not happy that her father has set up a scholarship for her to go to a private middle school named Westchester Country Day, but she’s going anyway. Nikki sticks out among all the wealthy and designer clothes wearing students. She spends most of her time writing in her diary. The books are written in diary format as though they are the personal journals of Nikki. The diary style book is filled with stories, the personal experiences and recounts of Nikki’s day, and art that includes doodles, illustrations, drawings and comic strips that all tie in and depict the drama of Nikki’s life both in middle school and outside of it.
Nikki puts everything that happens in her life and all her secret thoughts into her diary. These range from meeting new and soon to be best friends Chloe and Zoey, battling with her mom always to get an iPhone, developing a for real crush on the cute Brandon, struggling with the doings of her zany six year old little sister Brianna, and going up against and having to suffer the terrible meetings with the mean girl in school, Mackenzie. Mackenzie labels Nikki as a dork and makes extra efforts to make Nikki’s life miserable. Nikki is making friends though, but when she enters the art show for the school, her enemy Mackenzie is her new competition and is not planning on anything getting in her way. Will Nikki win? Will she triumph over Mackenzie? And will her secret crush notice she’s there?
