Best Michael Z. Williamson Books
Freehold is an excellent book written by Michael Z. Williamson. If you are a fan of military science fiction novels, then you are going to love Freehold. In this book, Michael Z. Williamson introduces the reader to Kendra Pacelli, who works for the United Nations. Earth together with several other colonies is under the rule of a socialistic United Nations, where mediocrity and incompetence are the norms. Crime is exceedingly common that women have learned to accept rape, while muggings, on the other hand, is just a part of the day-to-day life. Kendra has accused a crime that she did not commit; thus she decides to seek asylum in Grainne. Unprepared, Kendra Pacelli has to adopt quickly to her new life.
All in all, the Freehold is a great example of an exceedingly pure libertinism or capitalism and in the eyes of the United Nations, the antichrist. The government is made up of the military, small police force, and the courts. The exceedingly small taxation is optional, but it does carry some great benefits. The Rulers are expected to give out there entire wealth, so as to ensure that they do not have any other agendas apart from that of the government. Without the huge government, there is no corruption or pork barreling. Residents are allowed to carry weapons at any time. Crime level is exceedingly low, while the standard of living has increased significantly. Kendra, the protagonist, is exceedingly confused by way of living in the Freehold, especially the fact that no one is going to rape women for wearing provocative clothes. As expected, the women, are armed with knives and guns and anything else that has been rendered illegal on earth.
With that said, the society that the author has created is exceedingly interesting. So many aspects in this book are appealing. The book has been divided into two parts; the first part is the definitive mellui story. The second half of the book documents the conflict and the untimely war between the government of earth and that of Freehold. At the very beginning of the buildup, Kendra decides to join the army of the Freehold, an exceedingly small but practical and highly trained force. This is where the other transitions from the mellui story to the conflict story. All the characters in Rogue are exceedingly compelling.
If you are looking for a mix of science fiction and a definitive plot, then you should read Rogue. Rogue is the sequel of The Weapon, and it takes place more than ten years later. In this book, Kenneth Chiran, the protagonist has taken a new role and identity and is currently living very peaceful with his daughter. However, it is not long, before one of the Freehold agents finds him, and he is asked to perform one last mission. Kimbo, a team member, whom Ken had previously thought was dead resurfaced as a paid assassin. As an action packed novel, this book has been set in numerous locations such as Caledonia, Mtali, Novaja Rossia, and earth. It is exceedingly interesting to revisit some of the places, which had been featured in the previous books in the series.
Ken is a tortured soul. He walks on earth as one of the biggest killers in earth’s history. He fills responsible for the death of billions of earth inhabitants. His only hope and reason to live is his teenage daughter. With that said, the author has skillfully explored Ken’s soul together with his bleak outlook. This is a story about redemption, and the last pages of the book will surprise you. The Weapon is another excellent read from the author. This book has been set in the same period and universe as the one in Freehold. Just like Freehold, this is the story of Kenneth, a man who headed a series of attacks on earth. Due to the fact that Rogue is an exceedingly long novel, the author has divided this book, into three main parts. The first part involves Kenneth enlisting and training as an Operative. Operatives are elite black operations soldiers.
The second part in this book deals with a disposition to Mtali, a planet that is in constant faction warfare. The third part of the novel deals with the actual cover and training for an attack on earth. The story has been narrated in the first person. The reader gets to see the universe, through Ken’s eyes. We also get to see the transformation that he underwent from an exceedingly innocent teenager to a skillfully trained killer.
