W. Michael Gear is one of the highly reputed authors from The United States, who likes to write historical fiction, nonfiction, and Literature & fiction novels. In addition to being an author, he is also a well known archaeologist. Initially, Michael began his career in archaeology and was involved in reading about historical facts and fiction. After years of reading the historical fiction, which he felt were filled with numerous historical inaccuracies, Michael got sick of reading them and decided to write a book on his own. The resulting 550 page book was his first attempt at writing a novel. Even though it did not go well with the readers, author Michael was content with the fact that it was at least historically accurate. Since then, he has written many other novels in his career, most of which worked very well in the publishing world. Michael collaborates with his author wife, Kathleen O’Neal Gear, for writing novels on a frequent basis. The most famous work that they have co-authored together is known by the name, First North American novel series. Author Michael began his writing career in the year 1988, in which his first three novels were published. He was born on May 20, 1955, in Colorado Springs, Colorado, The United States, being a 4th generation native of Colorado. Michael’s family was involved in mining, journalism, and cattle ranching. Following the death of his father, Michael’s mother married again and started working as a journalist. His step father taught him die and tool making. They shifted to Fort Collins because Micahel’s stepfather wanted to pursue Ph.D. Living by the foothills of the Horsetooth Reservoir allowed author Michael to develop an interest in anthropology, motorcycles, and history. Eventually, Michael completed his high school graduation from the Fort Collins school in the year 1972. Later, he obtained his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees from the University of Colorado State in the years 1976 and 1979 and respectively. His Master’s degree in physical anthropology helped Michael to get a chance to work for the Western Wyoming College as an archeologist. Then, he went on to start his own consulting company related to archaeology in 1981 along with a couple of partners.
Michael was very much irritated by the inaccuracies that he encountered in the historical fiction, which used to keep him awake all night. And the eventual attempt to bring out a historically accurate novel enabled author Michael to grow as an author over the years. As of today, he lives in Thermoolis, Wyoming, along with his beloved wife and co-author, Kathleen Gear. The consulting company, Pronghorn Anthropological, that Michael helped start with his partners, is still running well in Casper, Wyoming. During the early years as an archaeological surveyor, author Michael was involved in working throughout the western regions of the US carrying out archaeological surveys, mitigation, and testing for oil wells, timber sales, power lines, highway construction, and pipelines. Michael says that while doing all this, he learned a lot about life and work. He understood the value of black coffee and also developed a taste for donuts of chocolate flavor. Michael even enjoyed eating in most of the quality restaurants in Mexico. At one point of time, author Michael traveled for a period of 9 months, carrying out different projects with only his dig kit, trowel, boon companion, tri color Sheltie, a clapped out Wonder Blazer, etc., by his side. Now, author Michael considers himself lucky to have gone through the rich experiences in the field of writing and archaeology. Both these professions have taught him a great deal of things, which he still carries with him today. The experiences of the archaeological world have helped him in writing his books.
The First North Americans series written by W. Michael Gear is comprised of a total of 24 novels, which were released between the years 1990 and 2016. The series is also known by the name ‘North America’s Forgotten Past’. An initial book written in the series is entitled ‘People of the Sea’. It was released by the Tor publication in 1994. At the start of the book, it is shown that around 12 thousand years before, the Sierra Nevada glaciers melted and destroyed the mastodons habitat. It resulted in the creation of the rich lands that later became known as California. Due to the drastic changes, the people living near the coasts struggled to understand the changes taking place around them. The mammoths disappeared continuously and the Sunchaser lost himself to the ‘Spirit World’. Soon, a beautiful lady arrives, who seems to have run away from her abusive husband. The people fear that more destruction will happen if they let the stranger woman live among them. Already, they have faced a lot of losses as their animals have been taken away by the Spirits. And if they provide shelter to the stranger, they believe that more bad luck is going to come to them. However, the Sunchaser seems to have fallen in love with the beautiful stranger. Due to this, he faces a great dilemma. He must choose between the preservation of the world of his own kind and the woman whom he has started loving. The novel was highly appreciated by the one and all. The critics and readers lauded author Michael for his efforts and motivated him to write many such interesting novels in the future.
Another interesting book written in the series is titled as ‘People of the Silence’. It was released in 1997 by the Tor Books. At the beginning of the story in this book, it is depicted that the Anasazi empire did not consider anyone equal to them in the whole of North America for around 800 years starting from 1150 AD. However, the seeds of destruction of the Anasazi lay within themselves, which they must find and destroy. The Sun Chief comes to know a secret while on death-bead. He considers it very shameful and refuses to let it go. A 15 year old girl lives in a village in the northern region. Sun Chief does not know her name, but wishes that she must be killed for the betterment of the empire. This young girl is named Cornsilk, who flees from the village after becoming aware of the danger to her life. She befriends Poor Singer, who is a curious man himself. They try to overcome all the obstacles in their path together, finally going on to discover the true identity of Cornsilk. However, they don’t have enough time as a deadly killer is stalking them. This book too became successful and was liked by many readers all over the world. The success brought a lot of name and fame to author Michael and helped him to establish himself as a noteworthy writer.

Books 3 and 4 of this series are exact copies of books 1 and 2. Only titles and some of the descriptions are different
3. WHITE MIST DOG. 2023.
4. A PANTHERS SCREAM. 2023
Supposed to be a 4 book series. Is there in fact 4 books in the series or are they the same books republished?
