A highly renowned author of science-fiction and fantasy novels, the American novelist Jeffrey A. Carver is a writer who has been producing his unique brand of fiction for quite some time now, with his imaginative and idiosyncratic take on the genre that remains unparalleled to this very day. Building worlds with a sense of scope and breadth that other writers continue to aspire to, he’s been able to forge a career using an innovative and inventive approach to this particular literary field. Producing lectures around his work as well, he’s been a forerunner in the field and a major advocate for this particular craft, something which will be echoed for many years to come.
Early and Personal Life
Born in 1949 on the 25th of August, the author to be Jeffrey A. Carver was born and raised in the area of Cleveland, Ohio in America. Growing up he always had a strong passion for the written word and a keen interest in literature, something which he nurtured throughout the years. Taking in inspiration from the world around him, he set out to harness his skills as a writer, eventually becoming the author that he’d always intended.
Attending and graduating from Brown University, he gained a strong academic education, providing him with what he needed. Building the foundations of what was to be his career as a writer, he learned himself all of the tools of the trade required. Giving him both the style and the tone which he would work from, he went about honing and refining his voice, making it more distinctive in the process.
With a vast and extensive working history, he has undertaken a whole host of different jobs before becoming a writer. From a stint as a quahog driver to a word-processing consultant, a UPS sorter to a scuba diving instructor, there’s been no end to the jobs he’s managed. This all came in useful when informing his later career as a writer, giving him a wealth of experiences to effectively draw from.
Currently still writing Carver keeps himself active with a whole host of different activities besides just writing. With underwater diving, nature, astronomy and science being just some of his other interests on the table, it’s easy to see where he gets most of his ideas. As he looks set to carry on for some time to come, it appears that his writing career will only go on from strength-to-strength.
Writing Career
Beginning his career back in 1976, he started on his path to becoming a fully fledged full-time writer with his first novel ‘Seas of Ernathe’. This would also begin his ongoing and much beloved ‘Star Rigger’ franchise, which was set in a universe of the same name. Setting the style and tone of much of what was to come as well, it really gave his readers a good idea of what they could expect in the years to come.
His long-running ‘Star Rigger’ universe series isn’t the only franchise that he’s currently got running either. With a number of other series as well, he’s easily one of the most prolific authors currently working within his genre to date. Other such series include his ‘Starstream’ novels, along with ‘The Chaos Chronicles’ too, as well as a collection of stand-alone titles and short-stories.
Winning a number of nominations and plaudits for his work, Carver isn’t without critical acclaim for his efforts either. Gaining a nomination for the Nebula Award for Best Novel in 2001, he gained positive success with his novel ‘Eternity’s End’. Not only that, but he’s also managed to receive a great number of good reviews for his books over the years as well.
With a worldwide audience spreading both nationally and internationally, Carver has also managed to reach readers on a global scale. Along with that, in 1995 he was also live broadcast across America’s middle-school classrooms for an educational lecture. Talking about his craft and the art of science-fiction and fantasy writing, he gave interactive advice with a TV series he developed himself.
Still writing to this very day, he continues to publish his many novels for an ever eager following of readers worldwide. With his lectures still available online as well, he continues to not just write for his genre, but he educates on it too. There’s plenty more to come from him as an author with a lot more set to be released on the near horizon, as he continues on into the foreseeable future.
The Infinite Sea
Originally published in 1996 through the Tor Science-Fiction publishing label, this was set to mark the third title in the ongoing Chaos Chronicles series. Continuing the now much-respected franchise, it manages to capture a lot of what made the previous title work, whilst also providing some surprises along the way. It also manages to build upon what came before, developing the world, along with the characters contained within it.
Lost within the deep-sea world of Neri, John Bandicut finds both him and all his companions thrown into an alien world. With this world consisting of just ocean, they head into the underwater city of Neri and attempt to best make sense of their situation. Many dangers await them, though, as they seek to navigate this strange and terrifying alien landscape as best they can. Will they be able to survive? Can they ever hope to leave? What will become of their time in the infinite sea?
Panglor
First brought out in 1980, this was set to be the third title in the ongoing ‘Star Rigger’ series of popular novels. Working as a prequel to the first two, it manages to build upon what came before, thus providing some further development of the world in the process. It also manages to further establish the style and the tone of the previous novels too, creating a better understanding of the characters as well.
Starting out with the protagonist of Panglor Balef, it shows the space pilot hanging desperately onto his sanity. Thrust deep into the depths of space, the pilot is reluctantly assigned a mission that seems apparently hopeless, leaving him cast adrift. Thrown into an alien landscape that apparently goes beyond the realms of reality, ultimately leaving him to question what the future might potentially hold for him. Will he be able to find what he is searching for? Can he discover the truth at the heart of this new world? What will become of Panglor?
